Harvest Goddess Pond

Description

This is my most recent cosplay: Harvest Goddess from the Harvest Moon series! I just started playing A New Beginning around Mother's Day, and I just fell in love with her character design and personality! I decided that her outfit was simple enough that I could make it as a last minute cosplay for Anime Mid Atlantic, and it actually turned out very well, in my opinion. I made the ENTIRE thing, including styling the wig, making the jewelry, and I made the accessories as well.

The hardest thing about this costume was by far figuring out how to do the bra top. I ended up draping fabric over top one of my strapless bras, sewing that around the cups, then I made a detachable band sleeve that goes all the way around to connect to the cups. This literally took me like 4 hours to figure out @_@ Biggest waste of time ever. I now know for future reference, that I will have to do this if I'm not using a stretch fabric or drafting my own bra top from scratch.

I made the costume out of crepe back satin and chiffon. I really like the look of these fabrics, and they fit the goddess look nicely. A common question I get asked is why I use satin so much, since it frays like crazy. Well, I say, that if you know how to handle it, it is really quite pleasant to work with. The trick is to be gentle with it, not use too many pins, and ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS FINISH YOUR SEAMS! If you do not serge every single seam when using satin, you will get fraying at some point. I say this and I don't even have a serger, so I had to do it the slow way, on a regular sewing machine. it literally took me over 2 hours just to serge three seams with my machine, that is how slow it is XD The chiffon slips like crazy when I use it on my machine, but I persevered and did rolled hems on all the edges. That took about 4 hours as well.

The wig was the big thing that stretched my creativity. I had an idea of how I wanted to go about styling it, and it most certainly was not what I ended up doing lol. I ended up teasing the ends and rolling the hair up into two odango, secured with two small hair ties each and A LOT of pins. I finished them off with a metric butt ton of freezing hair spray. needless to say, this is one wig that I keep displayed in my costuming room rather than trying to put it back in a bag XD. The accessories were easy. The earrings I did in an episode of Law and Order SVU, and I finished the arm bands during the same marathon. The one thing that is unique about the arm bands is that I painted the craft foam with a boar bristle brush, so they actually have noticeable texture to them, which I think was a nice touch.

I spent about 25 hours total making this costume over the course of two weeks. I probably could have gotten the entire thing done in 20 if I wasn't watching a crazy baby the whole time lol. I also am pleased to say that I got an honorable mention in AMA's masquerade for craftsmanship :) I'm glad to know I'm doing something right!
